Several people asked for a hit regarding my query for resources that
provided "songs identifiable with decades of the 20th century."
Thanks to those who responded ... here is what I received --

-- "Try New World Music" www.newworldmusic.com
and Sony 100 years of music box set $300 at Borders (it has pop,
classical, jazz, country, etc. but no real political stuff)

-- "There is a great CD called Apple Pie Music. It doesn't break
it down into decades, but into topics, which you could maybe
translate into decades -- there is prohibition and the world
wars and a lot of other stuff. You can search by topic or song
name, it plays the song, you can print out the words, and it
gives you historical and composer information for a lot of the
songs, too. It's not really a music CD -- I got it I think
        through Library Video catalog."

-- "The CD that came out with Forest Gump has a few songs from the
        50's til now ..."

-- "I believe that Time-Life had such a collection."

-- "It seems that years ago Readers' Digest had albums (remember
them?) with songs of the decades. They're probably on CD by
        now."
