I still teach it a little - like you. Mainly because I want students to be
familiar with it for several reasons. They could end up at a library
without any automation, etc., where it's their only periodical index. In
case the computers are down, print still works. AND THE BIGGIE - there are
still questions about the Readers' Guide on Achievement tests!
Just my 2c!

I've pretty much stopped teaching it altogether ... we have plenty
of on-line computers that are much more efficient and up-to-date. Still, I
feel queasy because it sometimes pops up on the darn standardized tests.

I last used it with my 9th graders this year, because when we went to do
magazine searches on the net, our system went down. This way most of the
kids were able to fulfill the assignment.

I promote Readers Guide because it shows (1) correct spelling (is this just
our kids that have such poor spelling skills?) and (2) the see also
references that narrow and clarify their searches. Sometimes the students
locate periodical references in Readers Guide and then go to EBSCO or
ProQuest and do a journal search to get the printed copy. And sometimes,
like today, our computers are down or slow and we can't access the
electronic references!

Call me an old fuddy-duddy, but I still teach and use the Reader's Guide.
We have an online magazine/newspaper database that will give kids hundreds
of hits on many of the topics they research. This particular database has
advanced searching which will enable the student to enter the article title,
magazine title, date or other very specific information which will retrieve
the specific article. A little time in the Reader's Guide saves online
searching time in the long run.

Yes, I still teach it because it is relevant to sources not on
the Internet and because it reinforces the idea of bibliographic
citations. I taught it this week to fourth, fifth, and sixth
graders.

I usually teach it in one period. (Used to take almost a week) Since I
have already taught them to use various magazine databases, they seem to
pick it up easier. I figure that they may be in the public library and need
to use it sometime. I don't even use it myself very often, but since we
still subscribe to it at both the middle & high schools, I feel that I
should at least introduce it.

No, we haven't used the Readers Guide in three years. And we do not
miss it. Online databases make it yesterday's technology.

My library serves students from grs. 6-12. I do not teach library skills to
students. At the beginning of the school year, I give orientation to
students about library users guides which contain rules, library hours, etc.
I introduce them to where resources are housed in the library and tell them
about the indexes we have and how they are useful to them. These last two
years, an HS English teacherwill request me to talk to his classes about the
periodicals and journals that we have and requested me to tell his class
about the Reader's Guide. I would distribute a sheet which gives a sample
of a topic and also explains how to read it. The teacher will then tell the
students to look for the article that he had assigned his students to look
for using the Reader's Guide and try to find the article from the magazines.
I would usually tell the students about the databases that we have at
present,eg. EBSCO and Sir Researcher, show them how to use, etc.

I found that it is our Middle School students who do not use the Reader's
Guide at all, nor EBSCO and Sir Researcher. I think probably due to the
nature of the research assigned by their teachers. They would go to the CDs
encyclopedia or use the books encyclopedia which I try to keep one or two
sets of the most up to date each year. Some would use the books we have in
the library. I observed that those who have no idea of what they are doing
would use the Internet more just to wine away their time. Those who know
what they want will search the library system first.

The HS students, especially those who are taking IB will use more of the
databases we have and will use more journals than the others. It all
depends on the teachers, some classes are asked to just look for information
in our vertical file.
