ELEM: Harry Potter: How long should checkout be?

Whew! That's some hefty book!  Our usual checkout time is 2 weeks.  That
seems unreasonable with a book this size.  How long should they get, and
do you work a book like this on reserve basis, or does the lucky child
who happened to wander into the library as the book was being returned
get to read it next?
