A teacher has posed a question and I think I know the answer but I wanted to consult some "experts" on the subject. Our science classes have 9 different textbooks which are all in class sets only and moved around from class to class as needed. I have a few of the textbooks in the library to check out but not all of the titles. The teachers use 1-2 chapters from each of the books to cover the curriculum. This poses some difficulties for students who do not finish homework in class. Parents comment (complain!!) that they cannot help students with homework since they cannot check out a textbook to take home. Is it legal for a teacher to photocopy just the chapters that he/she uses from each textbook and make these into packets to check out to students? Can he/she make as many as a class set of 30 to check out to students? As far as we know all of the textbooks are still in print. The teacher is considering writing and asking for permission from the publishers but I think that will send up a red flag and I have discouraged that step. I know someone will know the answer.
