I answered the original post to the person asking the question, but decided
to repeat it here with an addition:

I just use different colors of construction paper...when you laminate them
make sure you leave a little bit (1/4 inch or less) of laminate around the
edge. If you cut them too close they will come apart. Also, if you are using
tag, your laminator may be having trouble laminating something that thick.
Ours seldom fall apart.

The addition, in comment to Earl's post, is that we make each K-2 child a
personal one. This year we created a label for each with their name,
teacher, and barcode on it (using a barcode font). We print these on 3x4
laser address labels, using MS Works 4.0. Each week children who have
returned their books, or whose books are not overdue, get a sticker on them.
At the end of the year when they bring their book back for the last time
they get to take their marker home. This is a little added incentive to get
that last book in. Oh, we also put the 2nd graders ZPD on it. Next year, we
are going to make smaller ones (using 3/5 cards) for the 3-4 grades so we
can also put their ZPDs on them.

BTW, we also have created class sheets with their barcodes on it, put them
in plastic 8.5x11 sheet protectors and put them in a notebook. We also use
their student id number, which is also their lunch number, AR and STAR
password. The number stays with them until 12th grade and all of the schools
use it for lunch and library. We no longer have to shuffle barcodes,
purchase new ones, worry about losing someone's somehow.

Also, when children come in other than their library time we do have them
use the plastic shelf markers from Demco. It is easier than digging out
their own special one.
