(1993) Suggestions by LM_NET members Malcolm X. My Life by Isadora Duncan Dayle, Little by Little Vol 2: Stars Come Out Within by Jean Little Although Jean Little is a children's writer and the book it written to be readable by her fans it is a great story of triumphing over adversity and not too young for 11th grade. ______________ A Girl From Yam Hill Vol 2: My Own Two Feet author: Beverly Cleary For all those who grew up on her books, this is great. Too old for her young fans but perfect for those who remember her books. Lots of her autobiography has shown up in her stories of Beezus and Ramona and others. Also she had great trouble with her mother (perhaps appropriate for those 11th graders who think their mothers are in the way). ____________ Bill Peet An Autobiography Great, great, great. Half of each page is his pictures. He goes from his early years, struggle to graduate from high school and college, working with Walt Disney, etc. There are thousands of holocaust related ones. My two favorites are the second volumes of each of these. They treat what happened after release from camps, not as easy as one might have liked to think. Upon The Head of the Goat Vol 2: Grace in the Wilderness author: Aranka Siegal The Cage Vol 2: To Life author: Ruth Minsky Sender H. L. Mencken wrote Happy Days, Newpaper Days, Heathen Days, and A Choice of Days (a selection from the above three). Since he is considered one of America's great critics and is regularily quoted he would be a good choice. Also, he is a very entertaining writer. A Child Called IT and The Lost Boy, both by Dave Pelzer. After the kids read these they'll never complain about their parents again!! Dayle Cushen School Librarian Lindsay Place H.S.
