I know this is a little late in the year for some. But I haven't had a chance to post a hit until now. This was my original query: I am wondering what kinds of programs you sponsor in your middle or high school LMC's. Other than author visits, book clubs and contests like a Women's History Trivia Quiz, what are some of the events you sponsor? THANKS EVERYONE WHO RESPONDED!! ___________________________________________________________________ We've held a Poetry Reading Coffee House two yrs. now. More teachers signed up this yr. so I guess it went over well. We provide decaf coffee, herbal teabags & hot water & punch (kool aid) + cookies. The students love the refreshments! I sent out an invitation to all the English teachers with a return deadline. Told them to put date & time on their returns in case I got too many! I had it two days & had 1 or mostly 2 classes each period. Some stayed 1/2 & some the whole period (90 min. block!) We loaded a book truck with poetry books & had a bunch of literary mags I bought last year available (they were not too popular but added "ambiance"!) I told the teachers they could all sit around, read quietly & drink coffee or they could read aloud, their own poetry or a selection from a book. The teachers must approve the selection. We borrowed a tall stool, & also had podium to lean against if desired & handheld mike. Classes varied but many really enjoyed it. All read aloud -- no silent reading! Several teachers started off with either a poem they'd written or a favorite, then the students read. A couple even recited memorized poems. Last year I don't believe I let students in on passes or during lunchtime while this was going on, but this year I did since it lasted all day. It was sometimes difficult to keep those students quiet, but it worked pretty well. Of course Barnes & Noble (& my generation) were my inspiration! Last year I also tried "Lunch in the Library" during Teen Read Week, but that was not as successful since they always try to eat their lunch in the Media Center anyway. I could fax you my memos, etc. about the Poetry Coffee House if you're interested. ___________________________________________________________________ I do a program for Banned Books week every September, pull banned books and have kids try to guess the reasons, show films, "The Day they Came to ArrestThe Book" "fahrenheit 451". I also do a Program For Human Rights Day and use the Amnesty International CD, play "human rights bingo". I also have activities for Buy Nothing Day and National TV Trun-Off Week. ___________________________________________________________________ We hold monthly programs in the library, inviting speakers Oct through April. They are not always authors: this year we've had a drummer/composer who accompanies a local dance troup, another composer who graduated from our school, an environmentalist who made the Milwaukee Green Map, a former student who spent a year in Argentina, a nsp. columnist who writes about local architectural issues. In the past we have had an artist who has done murals on buildings in our city, TV sports personality, TV news anchor, TV weatherman, assoc. conductor of Milw. Symphony orchestra, actor from repertory company to read Capote's A Christmas Memory, a speaker on bats, a futurist,a speaker on skiing, etc. We try to appeal to various depts. and interests. Clue: Be sure to have an audience! Good luck - ___________________________________________________________________ Library Club--Volunteer student workers before and after school; they get a pizza party and a book at the end of each trimester. Reference Club--I give them a question and clues each week and they have to prove the answer in a reference source. They get a party at the end of the trimester and if they have turned in the right answer for enough weeks they get a book. ___________________________________________________________________ A coffeehouse for students to share poetry, acoustical music, mime, creative writing. ___________________________________________________________________ We have a "Question of the Week" in which we post a trivia question that can be answered using the almanac. Students have a week to respond, and those who get it correct are posted each week, andplaced in the school newspaper. We also participate each year in the states book award contest, in which students read nominated books, and vote for their favorite. We tie this in to our Reading Counts program, and our Battle of the Books program. Reading Counts is our computer based reading incentive program, similar to Accelerated Reader, where students take computer generated quizzes, earn points, and trade them in for awards in the LC, such as pens, pencils, etc. Battle of the Books is our trivia contest, where students read from a selected list, form teams, and participate in a contest to answer questions identifying the books. That's about it for my school. If you would like additional info on any of these, let me know. ___________________________________________________________________ Celebrity Reading Week, Library Sleepover, Reading Marathon Sharon Hamer Library Media Specialist Hopkinton Middle/High School 508-497-9820 x106 88 Hayden Rowe St. Fax 508-497-9829 Hopkinton, MA 01748 Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time--Steven Wright > ---- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
