An explanation of the Silver Birch Awards and Red Maple Awards
- A "People's Choice Award" for Children's authors in Ontario-

The Silver Birch Award and the Red Maple Award are both yearly awards
sponsored by the Ontario Library Association. The Silver Birch Award is an
award for authors of junior grade books and the Red Maple is an award for
authors of Grade 7,8 and 9 level books. There is an award for a fiction and
non-fiction book at each level. A selection of books is chosen by the
association in the fall. Book lists are made available to schools and public
libraries.  Classes  register with the OLA to receive ballots. In schools in
our district the teacher-librarians often work with selected groups of
students to read and review the books. Then on a set day in April or May the
students mail in their ballots to the OLA office and the winning author is
selected. There is an award ceremony in June where the authors and students
join together to hear the announcement of the winner. These are Ontario
author awards chosen by the readers. -  a well-respected award coveted by
authors!
