re: I have a parent ISO recommendations for her daughter's summer reading. Her child is finishing up the third grade, is identified gifted, and reads on a twelfth grade level. The parent stressed interest in content-appropriate books, given her daughter's age, and quality writing. The challenge seemed to be right up this group's alley! I'd suggest The Secret Garden, Little House Books, Girl of the Limberlost, the Anne of Green Gables books, and the four books in the Dealing with Dragons series. You might also encourage her to read across genre; sample historical fiction, mythology, the Charles Lamb Shakespeare book, traditional fairy tales in collections, fantasy, nonfiction, etc. No one really reads or uses what is truly written on a 12th grade level, so my advice is to have her read widely, not necessarily higher!
