Hello Holly, A subject near and dear to my heart! (We Canadians, by the way, are in school until the end of June.) Ours is a grade 8 to 12 school with a collection of about 10 000 items and NO security. My annual thefts are about the same as yours -- 150. (Has been around this number for 3 or 4 years now; it was much higher when I started.) A few years ago I collected some stats from people on this list about their thefts. The general trend was that, with security, losses were very low, sometimes single digit. It makes me think that either something is wrong with your equipment or the magnetic strips are easy to remove. To cheer you up, one librarian (who worked at a private girls school as I recall) with a collection of 15 or 20 thousand items and no security system had five thefts per year! That's a culture I'd like to tap into. For more info, search the list archives(try: http://ericir.syr.edu/plweb-cgi/fastweb?searchform+listservs ); this subject comes up from time to time. Despite the fact that we have a 3M security gate we have lost over 150 books (out of a collection of 10,000) this year...I am sick! And those are not books that kids have lost and paid for...they are ones that just walked out the door! I considered banning bookbags last year, but wasn't sure if it would be worth the hassle. Now I'm reconsidering for next year. Do you have a non-bookbag policy and how much does it help?
