Hi Holly and Robert,

I'm another Canadian who is still alive and kickin'. We don't finish the
school year until the very last day of June! Yuck!
Anyway, when I worked in a junior high school about 3 years ago I averaged
about 300+ books lost (not lost books paid for either!) and I worked there
approx. seven years! Our collection was about 8000. We had popular sets
of books that would just walk off the shelf. Our problem though, was no
security and the library was at the end of the school through which staff
entered the school from the parking lot. We had 2 outside exit doors and
one which led to the hall and the rest of the school. The doors from the
parking lot were not locked after I left for the day and I was always at a
loss as to what I could do to prevent these mysterious disappearances. We
usually lost 20+ popular author's books such as R.L. Stine, Stephen King,
etc. I would tear my hair out every year especially when the cost to
replace those books never materialized. What a tragedy! In fact, my
first year at this school the student council had helped to purchase a
computer for the library. It was stored behind my circ desk (still in the
boxes) and was STOLEN a few days before school started. I had a bad
feeling about leaving it stored there. I didn't ask for it to be brought
down to the library but happened to notice it out on a table when I went
in to check out decorating the library late in August. Anyway, someone
just walked in (we had renovations being done in the office at the
time),and walked out with a brand new computer! We never found out who
the perpetrator was!

Anyway, I am now in an elementary school and this year I will be able to
compare whether it'll be as bad here. I certainly hope not! I'll let you
know.
