I have had parents who insist that their child (usually K-1) not check out another book, after having paid for a lost one. I would let the child get a book when their class comes to the media center, then they would leave the book when they leave or they take the book to the classroom. The teacher provides a place in her classroom for the student to keep the book. If the child does not want to get a book, then they can look at a magazine while they are in the media center. I've had students want to check out two books, but they left one at home. I tell my students to check out a book, they must bring back a book. Every six weeks I send a list to the teacher of overdues and a note to each child to take home. I can't do this every day, as I sometimes average 30 overdues per day. My principal has been very supportive of my efforts to get my books back and has let me offer incentives to get the books back.
