Two more great suggestions have been received that I would like to add to the list of books for To Kill a Mockingbird! This is a little late but what about _Cold Sassy Tree_ by Olive Burns (Bruns?). When it came out, it was reviewed as the next To Kill and is a story set in the south at the turn of the century and told through the eyes of a young boy. His beloved grandmother dies at the beginning of the story -- kind of the matriarch of the family -- and, to the dismay of everyone, his grandfather marries a young hatmaker from the family-owned department store three weeks later because he's "lonely" and she's on the rebound from a broken relationship. It's funny and sad and says a lot of truth about people. Olive Burns wrote it while going through chemotherapy, wrote a sequel that wasn't nearly so good, and, sadly, died right after the sequel's release. ********************** Also Dangerous skies by Suzanne Fisher Staples - =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
