REF: Why is an ottoman (footstool) called an ottoman?

Why  is an ottoman (footstool) called an ottoman? Does it have to do with
the Ottoman empire? The dictionary has the etymology of the word coming
from the French "ottomane", feminine form of "ottoman" but nothing else.
