Thank you to all who responded to my request. The consensus was that pin-in-hole shelving is preferred over that with "hooks" although there was one respondant who had pins that would break, and there is sometimes the problem of kids taking out the pins! Everyone said that backstops are a must with double-faced open shelving. A couple of people preferred closed shelving for double-faced shelves, although I'll probably choose open for increased visibility and light. Other things to consider: the weight that each shelf will bear and the depth of each shelf needed for each collection. I think that's all--if there are other opinions out there, I'll be glad to post an updated hit.
