I was on the committee that just reevaluated and rewrote our AUP, basically for the same reason. "Because the district solicitor suggested that it be done to insulate the district from litigation. We do publish the AUP in our Code of Conduct manual that is sent to the home of every student in the district. There is a signoff page for the contents of the Code... Not signing does not relieve one from the responsibility of the Code... In other words, "I didn't know or read it," is not a defense for an infraction. As much as I may disagree with why it needs to be done, that does not change "the rules of the game". Rule #1 School districts do not want to be defendants in as lawsuit. This is why we are suspending students that have plastic fire axes with their fireman's Halloween costume, which violates the no tolerance policy. It's obviously not scripted by someone familiar with the language (whatever the language is). We'd like to find out what language it is and what it might say. Any suggestions for online sites? Any volunteers to have us fax it your way to take a look? Thanks to all. Krekeler" <Bstov123@AOL.COM> Subject: HIT: Harry Potter Challenges to Harry Potter Wow, thanks to everyone who sent me tips and resources in dealing with Harry Potter challenges. Here's what I heard. I will post the results after the March 22 meeting of the PTA Reconsideration Committee. Most people referred me to the Intellectual Freedom Office and Freedom to Read Foundation at www.ala.org. e-mail address: oif@ala.org They have information to assist with challenges. Other suggested resources: http://www.mikids.com/harrypotter/BANHarryPotter.html "The Christian Century" December 1, 1999 has a favorable review. "Christianity Today" January 10, 2000 Has a very favorable review, they even recommend it to Christians to be read. Chuck Colson gave it a favorable review in his BreakPoint Commentary November 2, 1999. Several Christian publications, Focus on the Family, for one that have not been as kind. For arguments against the Potter books: http://www.fflibraries.org/ ; then click on H. "Harry Potter, a Christian Hero?" It was originally published in daily newspaper of the Italian Conference of Catholic Bishops. It's linked to both the CESNUR and Harry Potter home pages. The address of the article is:www.cesnur.org/recens/potter_mi_eng.html The Tim and Rachal Wadham book is BRINGING FANTASY ALIVE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS, Linworth, 1999. Scholastic also helps with a collection of excerpts from reviews listed under "What they're saying about Harry" on their Potter Web page at: http://scholastic.com/harrypotter/index.htm Becky Krekeler Stover Cedar Rapids, Iowa Graduate student, University of Iowa bstov123@aol.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
