Subject: TARGET: K-8/Australia

As a tie-in for the Summer Olympics in Australia, I am looking for "good"
K-8 (mostly primary and intermediate) books about Australia. I did not have
much luck when I searched our Books-in-Print w/Reviews CD. Many titles
listed under the children's subject Australia are not reviewed, and I prefer
to have reviews. Then it occurred to me that elementary librarians from
Australia would be the "ultimate" source for recommendations. I am looking
for:

*       some solid, well illustrated(color) informational/travel and
description books
*       books about Australian animals/plants/ecosystems/geology/landforms
*       books about Australian culture(s)
* picture books with Australian characters or settings
*       poetry, music/folksongs, art

I'm not asking for much am I....It would be nice if these were distributed
from venders in the U.S., but I am not opposed to ordering from Australian
vendors. I will be ordering for 29 school libraries in Northern
California. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I am in my 2nd year as a librarian in an elementary school. This is the
first year I've really had an opportunity to order books and am finding my
lack of a good system for doing so to be a real nightmare. My current
concern isn't so much about the actual selection of materials, but how to
organize and create an efficient system so that ardering is a quicker
process. I had a hanging file folder system in which I stuck titles of
materials for consideration, but I found that I didn't keep up that system
very well. I am now in the process of creating a spreadsheet to keep as a
consideration file which I am hoping will work better. Here are questions
I'd like to pose to all the experts out there so hopefully I'll have a much
better handle on this in years to come and it won't take such an inordinate
amount of time! I'll be happy to post a hit!

1. How often do you order? Twice a year, every month? What are the
advantages/disadvantages of ordering at these intervals?

2. How do you keep track of the items that you are considering for purchase
so that when it comes time to order you can do so easily?

3. Do you employ any kind of system to help you rate or prioritize the items
you are considering for purchase?

4. Do you tend to order the bulk of your books from one jobber, or do you
price individual titles with different jobbers and order from the cheapest
source? (In my school system, 3 specific jobbers have the bid for books and
we must order from one of them - unless the title is available only through
a single source)

Any other useful tips or things that work well for you? Thanks for your
help!
