From: Peggy Beck <pbeck@RECOM.COM> Dear LM_NETTERS, My K-5 school, which had 450 students five years ago, will have over 800 students next year. The administration is proposing adding a new media center flanked by two technology rooms, freeing the current media center and computer lab rooms to make three new classrooms. I have grave concerns about adding that many students to a k-5 school and LOTS of questions about how to manage a media center for 800 students. Currently, I have fixed time, 30 minutes a week, for all students. I have been asked to research how the librarian/media center can best serve such a huge number of students and teachers. I have one full-time aid now and might be able to add another 1/2 time aid next year. If you work in such a large elementary school, how do you schedule classes--fixed or flex time? Do you have fixed time for younger classes and flex for older? How much planning time should I plan on if we switch to flex time? What are the best books to read about flex time? What should I as a trained librarian do and what can I have my aid(s) do without compromising too much? My principal is willing to send me to visit other schools to see how the library can best work in such a large school. (I work in northwest Arkansas.) Any suggestions about what schools to visit? Thanks for your help. ******************************************************************************* Kriste Rees Librarian/Media Specialist E-mail: krees@jcf.jonesnet.org Phone: 501.750.8877 Parson Hills Elementary School Fax: 501.756.8262 Springdale, AR 72764 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
