California Young Reader Medal
Winners Announced

The California Young Reader Committee is excited to announce the winners of
this year=B9s CYRM awards. More than 480,000 students throughout the state
cast ballots for their favorite books.

Primary Category: Lost by Paul Brett Johnson and Celeste Lewis. Orchard,
1996.

Intermediate Category: Riding Freedom by Pam Munoz Ryan. Scholastic, 1998.

Middle School/Junior High Category: Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine.
Harpercollins, 1997.

Young Adult Category: Breaking Boxes by A.M. Jenkins. Bantam, 1997.

A.M.Jenkins will receive the California Young Reader Medal at the CSLA Stat=
e
Conference in Santa Clara during our CYRM Awards Banquet on Friday night,
November 17, 2000.

The book titles that have been nominated for the 2000-2001 school year are
listed below. Students will read the nominated books from July 2000 through
March 2001 and vote for their favorites by April 1, 2001.
