Security Systems do detect theft, but the point is, why challenge the students? The better method of using it is to suggest that many of us forget to check things out and the system is meant to remind us. All we have to do when the buzzer goes off is to return to the chargeout desk and finish the checkout. This takes the challenge out of trying to beat the system (and the resulting damage to books when the strips are removed) and makes us less of a "police force".
