Date: Tue, 9 May 2000 09:59:24 -0700 We use the Reading Counts reading management program in our junior/senior high school. We are considering allowing students to earn credit toward graduation, using the RC program to monitor their reading activity. My son, a sophomore in high school, alerted me to the <sparknotes.com> website yesterday. It puts Cliff Notes to shame. My questions are 1.) Have any of you offered credit toward graduation using a program like Reading Counts? If so, I would be interested in your experiences. 2.) How do you see sites like <sparknotes.com> affecting your reading management program? It is my view that giving my time to these people is a disservice to the taxpayers and students...I am not here to make money for private companies. Typically, instead of paying for our time, these surveys promise to enter us in some drawing or other gambling type scheme. I for one will not participate in any of these surveys unless the school get something of value up front and not some worthless trinket. The latest one I received was from: Education Market Research P.O. Box 940418 Rockaway Park, NY 11694-0118 This survey promised a chance to win one of 5 $100 gift certificates from Staples. Big Deal. This to fill out a four page questionnaire with 27 questions. Doctors long ago got tired of this...Now they typically get surveys on the back of $5 or $10 checks...They answer the questions, endorse the check and get paid for their time... We should too. --------------1B34E27743BF90D07742960A Content-Type: text/x-vcard; charset=us-ascii; name="vcard.vcf" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: Card for David Neuville Triche Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="vcard.vcf" begin: vcard fn: David Neuville Triche n: Triche;David Neuville org: Ralph Waldo Emerson Middle School adr: 1650 Selby Ave.;;;L.A. ;Ca;90024;North America email;internet: dtriche@lausd.k12.ca.us title: Library Media Teacher tel;work: 310-470-0616 tel;fax: 310-470-0616 x-mozilla-cpt: ;0 x-mozilla-html: FALSE version: 2.1 end: vcard --------------1B34E27743BF90D07742960A-- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
