We are a high school library that had its first Scholastic Book Fair last
December. After reading a couple of years worth of postings from high
school librarians re: book fairs (e.g., how most material was more
appropriate for middle school, not high school, etc) we didn't have very
high expectations (of selling lots). However, we did much better than
expected. One of the reasons is that we requested and Scholastic sent us
not only Scholastic titles, but books from other publishers as well. For
example, we had:

Larousse Spanish-English paperback dictionaries
Guiness Book of World Records 2000 (hardcover)
ESPN Sports Almanac
The Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul books (perhaps these were a Scholastic
imprint?)
trade paperbacks such as Corelli's Mandolin
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and some classics

We only had a 20% discount, but we managed to sell about $2,700. (I have to
admit that students also bought a lot of "junk", too).

Perhaps high school librarians who are considering whether or not to have a
fair could ask their rep if they could have non-Scholastic books as well.
