At our school we have a number of fourth and fifth graders who are still reading at a first or second grade level. Many are sensitive about it and want to check out books that look like everyone else's, so they check out stuff like Holes and the Harry Potter series that is way over their reading abilities. Can anyone recommend books for these students? They need to be fairly low level and a few illustrations wouldn't be amiss, but they should be sized like "chapter books" and have themes appropriate to 4th and 5th grade. _Nate the Great_ and suchlike is about the right reading level, but the covers look too much like "little kid books." (sigh) We have both male and female students in this situation. Thanks for your help. I'll be happy to post a hit.
