An Anderson?

HI all,
Here is one that stumped all of us in our middle school.  A student is
reading Good Night Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian.  On page 72 the
characters are talking about covering up the Anderson with dirt.  We
don't know what and "Anderson" is.  The book takes place during W.W.II
and the best idea we all came up with is that it is some sort of bomb
shelter.
Do any of you W.W.II buffs out there have a better answer for us.  Our
8th grade reader would love to know and I will look pretty impressive to
all my staff if I can solve this mystery with the help of a great group
of library folk.
