I bought a laser scanner (PSC QS 1000) from barcode discount warehouse (www.bcdw.com). Our automation software is Follett for Windows and they encode the scanners they sell so they only work with their software and if you buy the identical scanner somewhere else (and much cheaper) it won't work. Needless to say they jack up the price about 100% and claim that their scanners are "Folletized". I couldn't believe that this was possible so I did some research and everyone I talked to was clueless except for BCDW. They knew exactly what I was talking about and, more importantly, what to do to get around it. We needed to buy an Un-Decodes scanner (it didn't matter which kind but this one was a good deal and much better than the CCD scanner Follett sells) and a bar code wedge reader to decode the Follett software. I don't know what kind of automation software you are using or even if the other companies try to do this but get in touch with BCDW, I'm sure they can help you. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Hiebert" <rhiebert@SD6.BC.CA> To: <LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU> Sent: Thursday, November 02, 2000 1:54 PM Subject: Barcode wands and scanners > Hello All, > > I'm having to replace my old (10 yr+) bar code wand (swipe over the barcode) and > I'm considering "moving up" to a scanner -- scan the code from a distance (as I > understand it). If you have a recommendation for a scanner (cheap ones scan at one > inch, expensive ones at one foot, is the price difference worth it?) and a good > supplier, so much the better.
