A local Michigan candidate not from my area used an ad that implied public library computers were hotbeds of pornography for children until HE sponsored a law to stop that. Within the last week a national party has also had an ad with the same implication. Anyone else bothered by this kind of rhetoric? Then, this past weekend, The Detroit News, Sunday, November 5, 2000, Metro section front page, page E1, had 2 large color photos with this headline: "Internet smut law disturbs librarians: Designed to protect children, measure blocks access to legitimate data, too." by Mike Martindale of The Detroit News. Sidebar "State restricions" noted provisions of Michigan Public Act 212 which took effect this October 1 and requires public libraries that offer Internet access to restrict access to minors --and ways it can be done. The Detroit News: http://detnews.com/ Metro this page that day (but I couldn't find it there:) http://detnews.com/2000/metro/0011/05/index.htm I know the concerns and the problems with trying to filter, but I am especially concerned when this becomes a campaign issue. Thanks for listening.
