REF: Poetry Request

Hi,
        Please help me.  I have had the following request and I do not have
the time to research for the answer.
        An English teacher came in today looking for the title and author of
a poem with the following line in it.  She thinks it could be the first
line.  She is sure the poet is an African American woman.  Here's the line -
"Life for me ain't been no golden stair"
        Help please!
