Hello All,

Recently I posted a request to know when students study inventors and
inventions in your libraries. Thanks to the 35 who responded.  Several
people asked that I post a hit. The compiled results are below.  The
summary is as follows:  Grade 3-->6; Grade 4-->12; Grade 5-->6; Grade
6-->5; Grade 7-->2; Grade 8-->2; Grade 9-->2.

THIRD GRADE

1) Our third graders in North Central Illinois study inventors and
inventions.

4) I am writing from an elementary school in Frisco, Texas, which is
near
Dallas. My 3rd and 5th graders study inventors and inventions. They read
the
biographies and use the encyclopedias and the Internet for research.

5) In my district, students study inventors in third grade. Biographies
are core
genre of the Language Arts program in this grade and include Thomas
Edison,
Ben Franklin, and George Washington Carver.

FOURTH GRADE

1) Our 4th  graders do Invention Convention, and  (yes!) I am always
searching
for biographies or biographical information of inventors for them.  The
information is not that easy to find. If you find some good ones, please
share.  I buy everything that I see that is not too sophisticated.

2) Our fourth graders do an extensive unit on inventors.  They include
biography reports, dress-up oral reports, and I assist with biography
skills lessons.  Great opportunity for in-depth collaboration!

3) At my school it depends on the teacher but 4th and5th mostly. I'm in

4) In North Carolina inventions are on the social studies curriculum in
fourth
grade.  They study the inventions and the process more than the
inventors,
but they do study biographies in language arts as part of the genre
studies.

inventors and doing some project with them.

8) I work in a K-5 school in a region that has 4
elementaries in Connecticut.  All fourth graders study
inventors and inventions as part of their Social
studies curriculum with a time frame of 1850 to 1960.

FIFTH GRADE

let all the elementary classes come through and see how they worked.

SIXTH GRADE

2) Last year, Toni, our sixth graders studied inventors and inventions
in tech
lab. We have a different teacher this year so I'm not sure if they will.
We're in Holbrook, Ariona, next door to the Navajo Nation. Our school
population is about 65% Navajo with a smattering of Apache, Hopi and
Zuni
kids, 10 or 15% Hispanic, and 20% Caucasian.  Not that it matters--just
reporting!

3) I'm in Dallas, Texas and my sixth grade science teachers have the

study black inventors as part of their class in the month of February
every
year.  We are an all black inner city school.

5) In our middle school (6,7,8) inventors are a part of the sixth grade
science
curriculum.  There is much local control in New Hampshire when it comes
to curriculum,

1) My 7th grade teams do inventions/inventors in science.  They
culminate
in a "Rube Golberg" exhibition where all the kids demonstrate their
inventions.

2) My name is Barbara Willingham and I'm a Teacher/Librarian at a
secondary school in Woy Woy, Australia (about 70 kilometres North of
Sydney). At our school students start studying inventors and inventions
in Year 7, which is their first year at secondary school (ages 12 or
13). Obviously the depth of study increases as they get older.

EIGHTH GRADE

1) We do them at 8th grade in Marshall, Michigan! Happy hunting.
