My favorite source for this type of thing is _The Timetables of history_ by Bernard Grun, based upon Werner Stein's _Kulturfahrplan_. Pub. by Simon and Schuster/Touchstone. ISBN 0-671-74919-6 or 0-671-74271-X. Don't remember now what I paid for it, but it wasn't too bad. For each year there is a listing for history, politics; literature, theater; religion, philosophy, learning; visual arts; music; science, technology, growth; daily life. While this is world history, not just US history, there will be something of US history listed for nearly every year. Hope this helps.
