Books on reserve

 During science fair we pull all of the project books
and a few highly popular topic books and put them on a
reserve chart.  Students come in with their science
class and use these books, and they also come in
during their lunch and break and browse through them
for projects, etc.  The problem is that every year at
least one or two "walk away."  We are just in the
process of getting automated this school year--so we
are still using the charge cards.  We pull all of the
cards out of the books before we put them on the cart,
and after each class my library aide trys to count to
make sure the right number of books are still
there--still a few slip out.  How can I avoid this
(short of security devices-are you kidding?  We just
got money to automate)  with my new automation?
