Hello:

I am a new Library Media Specialist (both on the job and in the field)
in a relatively large middle school (1,300 students) in New York and
have a few questions for you, the experts. If anyone would be kind
enough to share/answer any of these questions, please do so directly to
me. I will post replies for anyone who is interested.

A few things to keep in mind when replying: our Media Center is not
automated; currently only one computer with internet access - awaiting
arrival of 10 more to be networked for internet access; it is in
desperate need of weeding; student population is very diverse; school
magnets include sports, tv/media and health. Thank you in advance!!

1. I would like to start a student library club to help with various
tasks in the library (initially) and then move on to organize several
reading related programs. Comments appreciated.

2. I would like to see sample collection development policies, if
anyone is willing to share.

3. I need to place all my orders by December 15th. The entire
collection is desperately old. Although I should weed before ordering
so that I can see where the gaps in the collection are, there is no time
to do that now. Would anyone share your "must have" lists of Reference,
non-fiction, or any other sources/books/cd-roms/videos, etc.?

4. Charges for overdue/lost books (keeping in mind some of these
children may come from families with financial difficulties) ?

5. If there are several teachers doing projects on the same topic, do
you allow those books to circulate or create reserve collections? I was
beginning to create reserves, but just today was confronted with a
teacher who thought that this practice was ridiculous. Her theory -
when there are no more books to circulate, those children will have to
go to the public library and do their research there. Some teachers do
not want to give up one period to go to the library, nor do they feel
the students can do all their work in a 40 minute block. Comments?

These are questions are just the beginning. I've been lurking at the
messages being posted, and have learned a great deal from all of you.
Thank you!!!!
