This is a hit on all of the people who wrote about their palm devices. =
 Thanks everyone!

I have a Palm Vx and am grossly underusing it. Please post your responses. =
Also, Consumer Report annual book came out today and has an article on=
Palms. A month or so ago I met another librarian (now district head=
librarian) and she told me that their school district had given all the=
district department chairs a palm to get organized. I am impressed. My=
principal had asked me to switch back to paper calendars! (not talking=
about scheduling in the library calendar!).

Hi, Judy,,

I migrated from wood pulp to Pilot about 6 months ago, and haven't=
regretted it since. I do not know about using it with Outlook, though. =
Palm has their own scheduling software, and there are others you can=
buy/download off the NET. This is a neato system for me because I can=
carry it in my pocket. There is too much bulge still, but they'll get rid=
of that eventually. You install their backup software on your desktop=
workstation and sync your schedule, etc. frequently.

Get the 8 mb system. Don't go for the smaller capacity models as they are=
 less useful/versatile. =20

It is like having a little nag along with you everywhere...it warns you=
ahead about upcoming scheduled events you have entered. I find that=
Graffiti [the handwriting recognition software] was easy and is fastest to=
use, though at first I used the little pop-up qwerty keyboard incessantly. =
I bought a gotype keyboard for longer entries, too [$70]. I am way beyond=
loving my Palm Pilot now....it is just a fact of life for me. Investigate=
local wireless access capabilities before investing in the more expensive=
models. I don't have it here, so went with the IIIxe model, and it has=
served me well. I even have downloaded 4-5 ebooks to read while I am=
waiting for the lights to go down at a concert. I feel self conscious=
still about reading mine in line at the bank. Once in awhile I get teased,=
but people are now used to them, and the ones who bring a whole laptop to a=
meeting for note taking appear so burdened down. I guess you'll figure I=
recommend you make the shift. At first it is new and unfamiliar and neato.=
It is such a simple device, with so many capabilities [and more=
downloadable off the Net] that it rapidly becomes=
familiar...and...librarians should be perceived as being 'up-to-date.' =
Now I find that even administrators in my district are getting interested. =
I understand that the US Navy bought Palm devices for all of their=
 shipboard junior/senior officers! -Ray Van Diest/District Librarian/Shasta=

Judy, I have been using a Palm Pilot for a couple of years. After initial

resistance, I don't think I could survive without it, now. I am using a

Palm IIIe. It allows me to input info at the computer or on the Palm.

Everything is backed up on your computer, as often as you like. This model

is not web connected. My husband uses a Palm V. He loves that it is a

little smaller. Neither of us feel the need to use the Palm to access the

Internet or e-mail. Something you need to find out more about is what

account is used to access the web. I believe you can not use your present

internet provider, that is you need to have a separate account from the one

you already use. And there are connect charges involved. The last my

husband and I discussed the technology, we felt it is going to take a couple

more generations of Palms before it will be cost effective.

I bought my Palms at Circuit City and purchased the extended warranty. I

highly recommend you do the same, as I am on my 3rd or 4th one. I don't

know anyone else who has had any trouble with them, but the extended

warranty has paid off big time for me. If/when the model I have poops out

on me, it is replaced without question or hassle. If the model is

discontinued, you get the next model up.

I have a Palm (have had one for almost 4 years) and have synched it with=
several PIMs, but not Outlook. I know it is possible to do that as my son=
does. I can't live without what my husband calls the "Holy PalmPilot" which=
must be consulted before any scheduling.

I ise a palm -pilot--and love it. I, however, do not use Outlook. I use=
 ACT!

I have a Palm V and use it with my desktop, sharing calendar, contacts,=
etc. through Outlook. It works very well. It was easy to set-up.

I just bought my husband a Palm, and learned the following:

* the higher-end Palms and lower-end Palms have very few differences.

The more expensive models (the Palm V, for example) have a rechargable

lithium battery, while the more reasonable ones take 2 AAAs. They might

have a "better screen," but I thought the differences were pretty

negligible. Finally, the higher priced models have a metal case as

opposed to plastic. Needless to say, we ended up with the Palm IIIxe,

which retails for about $250.

* I also researched the Handspring PDAs, and the main difference is the

switchable modules that you can add to it. In other words, you have

your PDA, and you can click in a MP3 player module or digital camera

module...Pretty cool and allows for a lot of use, but the modules were

pretty expensive. Why not just buy a separate MP3 player (for less $$)

or a separate digital camera (also for less $$). I thought it was a

cool functionality if you want your PDA to be your everything. Which we

didn't.

* Palms hook up very easily to your computer - they come with a docking

station and software and everything you need. You can also download

software off the internet (my husband plays backgammon on his PDA all

the time) onto your PDA using your docking station.

* We haven't used it for e-mail, since this requires buying a separate

modem. I think if you traveled a lot and didn't want to deal with

bringing a laptop, it might be neat.

*** the most helpful thing for me, ultimately, was to go to Best Buy and

talk to someone there. I did research on the internet to get the lingo

down, but the guy behind the counter ultimately helped me out. And I

went to Best Buy because they aren't on commission, so I didn't get the

upsell pressure.

I use a Palm Pilot IIIx primarily as a calendar and address book organizer.

It's great. You may enter data in either your PC and/or PP and synchronize

them to keep them both up to date. One backs-up the other. Another function

I use is the ability to download articles from great magazines and

newspapers via the web.

>>I just got a palm pilot, the bottom of the line and I just love it! It

>>is great for keeping track of my schedule and calendar and just keeping

>>everything together. Now I don't have to wonder where I put that scrap

>>of paper with that note on it, it's in my palm.

I am a new school librarian this year (mid-life career change) and my

>husband got me a Palm IIIC for my new job. We have Outlook for e-mail and

>scheduling on our PC at home, and purchased Desktop To Go software to sync

>calendars between our 2 palms and Outlook on the PC. It syncs everything:

>calendars, contact lists (address book), ToDo lists, notes, and it will=
 also

>allow you to read Word and Excel documents on the Palm. I can put in my

>appointments and my husband will get them on his Palm. We chose the Palm

>III because it uses the same cradle charger/comp. interface as his Palm=
 VII,

>so he leaves his cradle at work and I leave mine at home. He is the real

>expert in all this stuff. I am only a minor techie! If you have more

>questions, feel free to write, and I will answer or ferret the answer out=
 of

>him!
