Dear LM_Net Members, Thanks to all of those who responded to the marc record source inquiry. Several list members requested a hit response, so that follows. I did search the LM_Net archives and found the same inquiry sometime back and there does not appear to be much difference. After a short investigation I would tend to organize the hits into three categories. The first category is marc services that are rendered for a fee. One example is Marchive, which came recommended by several list members. The user provides Marchive with a cataloging profile, searching is free, and records are $.27 for each ordered. The profile is then applied to the record and it becomes available the next day. http://www.marchive.com Another category would include software developed to search library marc records and return results in a format easy to manage and manipulate. EZCat and InterCat were two providers for this type of solution. I believe both of these products will allow the user to select the libraries that the user would prefer to search. Both were recommended by list members, and both provide demo downloads. http://www.booksys.com/ezcat http://alpha.tkm.mb.ca/intercat/ The third category would be those Web based systems that search the Library of Congress catalog and then provide the user with a file that contains all the records selected by the user which is easily imported into cataloging programs. This type of marc record finder received the most praise from those who responded. FreeMarc and LibraryCom were the most often recommended, but I believe they are the same. The user has to register, but I found this to be the resource of my choice. http://www.librarycom.com/ http://www.freemarc.com/ Finally, the Library of Congress was resource recommended most often. Again, the user can capture the record in a format that can be imported into cataloging software, but it takes a little more know-how on the users part. http://catalog.loc.gov Thanks for all your help, Charlie ********************************************* Charlie Roberts, Media Coordinator Pine View High School 2850 E. 750 North Street, St. George, UT 84790 Phone: (435)628-5255 EXT 4 FAX: (435)628-0327 chas@edtek.org =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
