Thanks to Kate, Connie and Kim I now have the answer
This is a scene from the movie THE YOUNG PHILADELPHIANS. Paul Newman
portrayed the young lawyer who foiled the prosecution by proving their
witness was mistaken. He was defending his old school friend (Robert
Vaughn, I think) on a murder charge by testing the butler's skill of
distinguishing different liquors by smell only.
