Hi...I went here: (I had time...waiting to get a shower before heading to CSLA!) http://search.britannica.com/frm_redir.jsp?query=cockroach&redir=http://www.bi o.umass.edu/biology/kunkel/cockroach.html Encyclopedia Britannica Online: (I tried to break it down to make it simpler to understand): Why do cockroaches die on their back? First, few cockroaches die on their back in the wild. Second, they are not used to living on marble or polished floors, as in our kitchens; so that when they find themselves lying on their back, they have trouble righting themselves if there is nothing to grab onto with their legs. Also, the dead cockroaches we find in buildings have died of insecticides: they are organophosphate nerve poisons. That nerve poison often inhibits cholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetyl choline (ACh), a nuetrotransmitter. With extra ACh in its system, the cockroach often has spasms that make it flip on its back. Without muscular coordination, the cockroach cannot right itself, so it dies on its back. While this doesn't answer your question, it has a LOT of odd "roach" facts: http://yucky.kids.discovery.com/noflash/roaches/index.html Jane ;-) Jane Coffey President/Founder THE READ IN! www.readin.org =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
