Thank you all for the responses to my request for advice regarding the
replacement of a 17 year old expensive globe.

Most recommended getting rid of the globe (several recommended that it have
an unfortunate accident) and just replacing it.

Some recommended keeping it, but make sure that there is a note nearby
explaining that it is out of date.

Some recommended using it for a future lesson comparing how the world has
changed.

One person suggested I contact the development office since it was a gift and
see what they recommended.  They could perhaps approach the right group for a
replacement globe.

I did go to the development office and explained the situation.  It was
suggested that I do some research to get prices and she would see what she
could do.  I did that and was not happy.  To replace that globe with
something similar by the same manufacturer would be close to $3.000!
Needless to say, that will not be coming out of my budget.  I think that I
will wait until the summer and let it disappear into the summer winds and
just get a cheaper desk model to place on the reference shelves.  In the mean
time, I have placed a note on it, stating that it is out of date.
