I came across an interesting approach to the teaching of Boolean searching in English Journal. This was created by Laura Cocozzella and Kearney Francis from the Montgomery County Schools in Maryland. Students take the role of databases for a search. When the search term that the teacher calls out relates to them, the student needs to stand. The exercise starts with "student" (everyone would stand). Then "student AND movie fan". Maybe a a few would sit. Then the terms becomes "student and romantic movie fan" and so on. I will try this myself over the next ten weeks, but it sounds like it should work. The entire article is a good one for helping students with web searching: Elliot, Catherine B. "Helping Students Weave Their Way Through the World Wide Web" English Journal. November 2000, pp. 87-92.
