Several ppl have asked why there were objections to the Wayside stories.
The concerns focused on what seemed to the parent to be disrespectful
behavior & language by the students in the stories. She also found one
chapter to be "too frightening" for children (her child is a second
grader). I know that some of us are surprised to hear these things but over
the years we've heard all sorts of things so that nothing should
surprise us anymore.

I don't, however, mean to make light of the parent's concerns. I
believe it's important that we respect parental concerns such as this.
This parent simply wants what she believes to be best for her child.

"Obscenity and hate speech alike only become free speech issues when their
foes turn from censure to censorship. When we decided to let a thousand
flowers bloom, we always knew that some of them would be weeds."
