I absolutely check out books over vacations, with a caveat to students that
carrying books to distant cities or having visiting Cousin Ernie take home
your books by mistake does have its risks!  The kids are not as loaded with
homework over vacation and have some time to relax and read.  I don't find
that book loss over holidays increases above the normal levels.
