I absolutely check out books over vacations, with a caveat to students that carrying books to distant cities or having visiting Cousin Ernie take home your books by mistake does have its risks! The kids are not as loaded with homework over vacation and have some time to relax and read. I don't find that book loss over holidays increases above the normal levels.
