WOW!! What a response I received to my quest for Christian books for Teens. Several people asked for a hit. It will follow this. First though, let me expand on my earlier comments about the genre. I already buy the Left Behind: The kids series by Jenkins & LaHaye. It is very popular. I read the first couple, but found the writing poor, as is the writing in the adult series. The books "Tell," they do not reveal. They are sensationalistic. The finer, subtler elements of good literature, such as foreshadowing & character development are lacking. Instead of revealing the characters' beliefs & attitudes through the rising & falling action, they come right out and say things like "Judd was angry and resentful that he was named after his father (not an exact quote)." The characters are one-dimensional before the rapture and one-dimensional to the other extreme after. I am a Christian and it sort of bothers me that the glory of the Holy Ghost is not being better represented by the authors. But, that's just my opinion. The kids like them, so I buy them. My own husband enjoys the adult books. I also purchase the Clearwater Crossing & Focus on the Family series, which are a heck of a lot better than the Making Out, Turning Seventeen, and Clueless stuff. Catherine Marshall's Christy is one of my all-time favorites. I am planning on buying most of the books that were suggested by all who wrote (I'm blessed with a rather nice budget). Many are already owned (CS Lewis, Girzone's Joshua series, etc.) and I've set up a special display. It was nice to hear that the Bethany House publishers put out quality stuff. I've also checked out the latest Christian Review in Booklist and ordered a few titles. For the sake of balance & fairness, I also wish that there were more books depicting a Catholic lifestyle & beliefs. For that matter, I would also like to find books that depict Jewish, Islamic, & other beliefs too. There exists an abundance of books about Jewish characters, but most seem to be of the WWII/Holocaust era. I would like to see more contemporary realistic fiction. But, that's another HIT.
