Many of you asked for the information I got. I have cut and pasted leaving
only the city of origin so you can judge how useful it might be to you - I
didn't ask ahead of time to publish replies so I don't want to give out
identifying info...

Thanks for all of you helpful answers; I now know which direction to go.
Becky

HERE WE GO--------------------

We have one from an outside company. The LMT before me set it up. We don't
make any money on it that I'm aware of, unless it goes into our account in
the office. They provide paper, toner, everything and they have the key to
the money box. They come from time to time and empty money and leave paper.
I call them if it needs repairs. It's nice because we can tell kids we
don't handle money in here at all. They have to get change at the student
store. It doesn't provide copies for us. Fortunately the career center is
in the library and they have one we can use for small batches. For big jobs
we use the big machines in the admin building.

Riverside, California
-------------------------------------
We have been looking for a new copier and wanted one that the company would
own and service and keep all the money from. What we were told by several
local dealers was that if the copier doesn't generate at least $100/month it
wouldn't be worth it to them. We are a medium sized school (1000 students
and currently generate $40 month at .10/copy. Our 2 options are lease the
machine for about $100 per month or buy a refurbished machine for around
$3800. Both of these options include a dollar bill/coin operated system and
a service contract billed at .02 per copy. Service covers everything but
paper and we keep all of the money. Purchasing is probably the best option.
We are going with a local vendor who promises to service the machine as long
as we own it. We will probably raise the price to .15/copy to help recoup
the cost quicker. I hate raising the price because our students are so
poor, but it will take me about 8 or 9 years to recoup the expenses.

Livingston High School, Livingston, CA
-------------------------------------------
We have a Mita coin-op that we lease/purchase from a local co. We pay a
maintenance fee based on # of copies/month. This fee includes all repairs,
and supplies as well as regular cleaning etc. The local co. is great. They
are here whenever we call. The co. that carries the lease is Advanta and is
terrible!! They tried to bill us for 3 mos. before we even had the copier
on site. We have regular billing problems with them. I still would
recommend the lease/purchase plan.

Irvington, AL
-----------------------------
At [previous school], we had a co. supply the copier, paper, ink, toner,
with 100 free copies a year with my bypass key, which I probably abused by
50, and never was charged.
Kids had to think about it, when they have to pay.
At [current school],
We have a free one here...teachers and kids love it. But, I am seeing more
waste this way. My sec. says "No more than usual." The old copier was always
breaking down here, [previous librarian] let it go. Plus, it was always a
dilemma...having one to pay, and one that was free....that's a no-brainer
for kids.

--------------------------------
I have a company called K and M Business systems out of Redmond that has
a pay copier in the library. It has been here since I came about 7 years
ago.
They supply everything. There's no cost to me, and they do come promptly
for repairs. They also come periodically and clean it.

Edmonds,WA
---------------------
We have always had K and M Business Services handle our copying needs in the
library. They charge .10 per copy and supply all paper and toner. We get a
couple hundred free copies per year. The service is fast, generally same
day if a repair is needed. Our copier is an older model, which produces
primitive gray images, but if you need a copy, you need one. It's used
quite a bit, though probably not like getting free at [other school];
they'll probably grumble about having to pay.

Lynnwood ,WA
----------------------------------
We currently have a leased machine with Xerox. They take care of the
repairs. We leased the coin box from another company and a card thingy
(sorry don't know the technical term) so that teachers can use cards to copy
from a 3rd company. I don't recommend doing it this way. This machine is
on its last legs and our board is forcing us to purchase the next one. We
purchased the big copier in our office a few years ago and it seems to be
cheaper than leasing.

Saanichton, British Columbia
Canada, V8M 1S8
----------------------------------------
About a year or so ago someone on this list suggested TRM and left the
Philadelphia-area rep's phone number. We have a new machine with coin box,
service has been wonderful, and it costs us nothing because they supply
paper
and toner! They call once a month to ask for a meter reading and send us a
bill. Looks like headquarters is in Portland (Phone: 503-257-8766).

        Wilmington, DE 19810
        ---------------------------------

We have had a coin copier for our high school students for about 12 years.
It has worked just fine. They provide the machine, the paper, the toner,
etc.
We provide the location and electricity. When the machine jams we do try
to
fix it and we load the paper trays. We call them for all other problems and

they have been great in coming within 24 hours.
We charged a dime a copy and the company gave us a penny back. This year I
raised the price to 15 cents and I'm keeping six cents now. Our last check
was for $100 (two months.). this pays for the expenses on my library office

machine. Do not let them keep all the money.
-----------------------------------

There are no companies in Tucson, that any of us can locate, that continue
to put coin-operated copiers in libraries any more. The one that was in my
library was picked up in August. It was no longer profitable for the
company. Free copies were part of the arrangement in past years.
Tucson, AZ 85746-9099
-----------------------------------------
We have two coin-op copiers in our library and both are used lots. We own
one. The other is a freebie.

The one we own is a Canon, and we make monthly payments of about $240 each
month year 'round. This includes purchase price, toner (we call whenever we

need more and they send it), and maintenance. I think the purchase price is

spread over about three to four years. It's a great machine -- makes
enlargements, prints on three paper sizes, prints back to back. We easily
make the money on the copy charges (10 cents per page) to pay for the
monthly
fee and have a little extra left to buy books. The only other cost is the
paper, which we have to supply, but we use the school's general supply
stash,
so there's no direct cost to us for that.
The freebie is supplied by a local company. They place the copier, supply
toner and maintenance, and keep all the profits. We supply the paper. If
we
go over a certain number of copies (I can't remember the number) we get to
keep a two-cent profit per page.
Our school has 2800 students in grades 10-12. We encourage kids to copy as a

study technique so they can highlight and organize their notes, so lots of
copying is done.

Newtown, PA
-----------------------------------
We had to go out for bids (min. 3) and so stayed local. I talked our
principal into splitting costs - about 25% from my equipment fund, the rest
from him. We purchased a Canon with a coin machine and charge .10/copy. I
run
a "book club" and we are the ones who make the profit, and use the money to
subsidize book selections we read, new books for the Library, and "community
service" book purchases. We get paper from the school supply and I purchase
toner from my Library supplies $$ - so far no one has questioned that,
although
I know many groups who profit from the photocopiers must pay for their own
supplies. This is not a huge money-maker, but we are able to get some
books!

Queensbury, NY 12804
---------------------------------
Ikon had a copier in our library but removed it last summer - it wasn't
making them enough money ;(

We replaced it with a little Canon copier... and love it... free copies of
research materials only (this takes a little enforcing at the beginning, but
they get it finally...) The joys of not having pages ripped out of reference
books or having whole books stolen because the kid doesn't have any change
are OVER.... yea!!
