Thank you to all the people who responded with suggestions for:

"an inexpensive (less than $50), easy to use, piece of
software to create certificates. I would like it to be available on both a
PC & Mac platform if at all possible, but I'll entertain suggestions for
either!"

++++++++++++
    AppleWorks (or ClarisWorks in its older versions) has an "assistant" for
making certificates. It has 4 or 5 different formats. The program can also
be
used to make your own without the assistant if you want to. I believe it is
available for both platforms and is a highly versatile program for other
purposes as well. You can also combine it with an AppleWorks database and
print individual certificates with the names entered as well.

I have used Broderbund's PrintShop Deluxe with great results. I bought it at
Marshall's (a discount department store) for $9.95! Even if you buy it off
the shelf at the computer store at full price I think you won't spend more
than $30 for the super-duper version. I love the program - banners,
certificates, signs, cards, labels, and more! Hope this helps!

+++++++++++++++
I don' t know about inexpensive, but I have used Print Shop and Kid Pix to
make certificates.

++++++++++++++++
I use Print Master Platinum. The price may be in your ballpark. They often
have specials.
