This is the list of responses to my original request for a 4th grade lesson
(during Children's Book Week) for an observation for my SMS. She decided to
play our version of Library Jeopardy (we give the questions, kids supply
answers) with the 4th grade which reviewed what they had learned in third
and at the beginning of 4th. It was a big hit and the principal loved it and
was amazed at what the kids knew. Our favorite response for the Daily
Double: What is the full name of the URL on an Internet site? The answer:
You Are Looking (URL)!! Our categories were: Fiction, Non-fiction,
Reference, Library Skills, General Literature

Responses, and thanks to all:

I suggest she read a book like Little Lumpty or the Big Pumpkin and have
the students create another way to solve the problem. Little Lumpty is
Humpty dumpty's nephew who gets stuck up on the famous wall. My
students did a great job of creating new versions of the story and
different characters to portray Humpty Dumpty. I even wrote a new
version "Little Zumpty" the girl's version of Humpty Dumpty. It was
successful with all my elementary students.

It's also National Geography Awareness Week - perhaps you can get
students and faculty to make note of cities, states, landmarks, rivers,
as they come up in stories and/or current events...Create some kind of
marker to be placed on a world or USA map, or an outline of either, that
cites the book or story that the location is mentioned in - Discussion
can go on re: book titles, authors, and the context of the specific
location made note of.

This one is really involved, but worth it for some fun. Get a copy of
Cook-A-Doodle-Doo. It involved making strawberry short cake, and the
recipe's in the book. Of course, it all depends on if you have access to an
oven. It would be a blast to make. A little messy, but the book's a rip. My
son, who is in fourth grade, laughed out loud at it.

Good luck, and enjoy.

My favorite lesson is to have students write the first lines (or paragraph)
that represent good hooks for novels.

They illustrate a card with the lines and write a bibliography on the back.
Last year we made a Christmas Tree bulletin board out of the cards.

Thanks again!
