Target: 8th grade novel re: tolerance or persuasion

Does anyone have a suggestion for a novel to purchase as a classroom set
for 8th grade study? The teachers are looking for something with a theme
of tolerance, or perhaps something that involves controversy and
persuasion. If your eighth grade teachers have some favorites, please let
me know.

Two that they are using very successfully are Yolen's The Devil's
Arithmetic and Avi's Nothing But the Truth.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I'll post a hit if there is enough
interest.
