TECH: Accelerated Reader Version 4.5 & Up

Hi,
  We recently purchased several AR tests online--a real convenience!
Unfortunately, after installation, I discovered that many of the tests
were not accessible.  I learned (from their tech support) that tests
with test numbers above 34000 will not run with AR Version 4.0.  To make
matters worse, these test titles are not removable!  So...kids see a
title for a test but cannot access it.
    Tech Support graciously offered to send a diskette with an upgrade
to Version 4.5 which would provide full access to tests.  However, the
tech people in our district do not want to load this software because
one of our schools has reported problems following installation
(computer crashes, etc.).  We have AR Version 5 and 5.1 (or
5.2...whichever), but tech hasn't installed it because updating every
computer using AR is required--not just installation on the server.
     My question is...have any of you experienced these problems running
Version 4.5 (over a cross-platform Network)?  Also, have the problems
many of you reported when AR Version 5.0 was released been resolved with
Version 5.1?  What is your suggestion...load 4.5 as a temporary "fix,"
or hold off (probably until next summer!) for installation of 5.1?
