To fellow LM_NETTERS: I have been doing lessons with first grade classes this week that have been working out great. I've been trying to elicit from the children the characters, setting and plot of stories by Kevin Henkes (such as Owen and Jessica)and by Helen Lester (such as Listen Buddy and Tacky the Penguin). I have them try to answer the questions who? for characters, where? for setting and what? for the plot and we try to pick out the beginning, middle and end which translates as: what we find out about the main character first, the problem that he or she finds himself in, and how it is solved. The above mentioned books are just perfect for this lesson. To continue along these lines I'd like to do some sequencing lessons where the children can number the events that occurred in the book. Can you think of any particularly good titles for this type of lesson for 1st graders? Your help is much appreciated. (I'll compile and post a HIT).
