Somewhere I learned that your local call number is your own business--but consistencey with the rest of the world is nice, and generally helpful to your patrons. In my last school ( and I'm thinking of doing it here) we put lit crit next to the author's works. We used 813.54, e.g., followed by the first three letters of the author whose work was being critiqued, followed by (in lower case letters) the first three letters of the author of the criticism. So all of Hemingway's stuff came first, followed by all of Hemingway's critics. Great for browsers, and not too obtuse for those depending on the catalog. Of course, the collation aspect of catalogs, especially electronic ones, may make this less of an issue than before, but it seems like a convenience to have them on the same shelf. Maureen S.
