GEN: SEC: WWII Naval battle

Dear LM_Netters:
We have a textbook that states "...the USS Kerney limped into port on October
18, 1941..."  BUT the teacher is wondering if this is an error because WWII
didn't begin until December of 1941.  He is pretty complete when he researches
and rarely calls me...Any one have any information on the USS Kerney and when
it was hit and which battle?
