This fall our fourth grade moved back to our middle school from the elementary building. (We are a fast-growing district, particularly in the elementary grades.) The middle school/junior high library now serves grades 4-8, and I had talked with the fourth grade teachers about our having materials for all the grades and that they needed to understand the our collection must serve kids ages 9 through 14. Well, a 4th grader checked out Spinners and her parents are writing a letter of complaint about its beginning pages. They and the teacher is wanting the book pulled, and I'm afraid of what's ahead. Has anyone else faced this situation? Admittedly the book is for YA but we serve YA along with younger students. I wondered about stickers -- Demco has Teen Book and YA stickers but hate to get into going through 8,000 books determining what's appropriate. Or, should this be a part of the curriculum -- we talk about reading level selection.
