Maryland schools request more state aid for libraries
          The proposal, asking the state school board for nearly three =
times the amount of current funding, comes in reaction to state educational=
 statistics that show fewer than one in five school libraries meet =
Maryland standards for the minimum number of books and supplies. (American =
Libraries Online)

Study of Massachusetts school libraries released
          The study shows that many public schools in Massachusetts do not =
have a library. The report also says that children from low-income =
families who attend schools with a good library program score higher on =
state tests than similar children who do not. (American Libraries Online)

Education spending, with filtering mandates, still in play
          By all indications, a complex filtering mandate only slightly =
altered from earlier drafts will be included in the final education =
spending bill to be sent to the President. Timing for passage of this =
measure could be as late as next Wednesday. (ALA Washington Office =
